Wooden Toy Safety, Materials & Age Grading

Every kasthatoys toy is made from solid neem or beech wood, finished with water-based, non-toxic colours, sanded to remove sharp edges and checked against BIS IS 9873 requirements. Test documentation is available on request, and every product page states its age grade.

🛡️ BIS IS 9873-aligned🌿 FSC-certified wood🎨 Water-based colours🚫 No BPA, PVC or phthalates

What Does BIS IS 9873 Cover?

IS 9873 is the Indian toy safety standard. It tests mechanical and physical hazards (sharp edges, points, small parts and pinch points), flammability, and the migration of heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium from paints and materials. Toys for children under three get extra scrutiny for choke hazards because mouthing and swallowing are developmentally normal.

Wooden is not automatically safe: cheap industrial paint, formaldehyde glue and rough sanding can fail the same tests. Ask any wooden toy seller for the BIS licence or a test report for the exact product.

Materials We Use — and Avoid

What we use

  • Solid neem and beech wood, no MDF fillers
  • Water-based, child-safe colours
  • Food-grade oil or beeswax on unfinished pieces
  • Rounded, splinter-free sanded edges

What we avoid

  • Lead-based or industrial paints
  • BPA, PVC and phthalates
  • Formaldehyde glues and MDF dust
  • Small detachable parts on baby toys

Age Grading and Small Parts

Age badges are safety information, not marketing. Toys marked 3+ can contain small parts that are a choking hazard for younger siblings. For 0–12 months, choose one-piece rattles and teethers; for 1–3 years, choose chunky stackers and walkers with no detachable beads; for 3+, introduce puzzles, domino blocks and construction sets under supervision.

Inspect wooden toys before every use. Retire any piece with splinters, cracks, loose joints, chipped paint or a wobbling wheel. Our wooden toy cleaning guide explains safe daily and deep cleaning without warping the wood.

How to Verify a Toy Before You Buy

  1. Check the age badge and the small-parts warning on the product page.
  2. Ask for the BIS licence or test report for that specific product.
  3. Confirm the finish: water-based paint, food-grade oil or beeswax — not varnish or industrial lacquer.
  4. Inspect on arrival for sharp edges, loose parts and paint chips before handing it to a child.

Safety FAQs

Are kasthatoys wooden toys BIS certified?

Our wooden toys are made to meet BIS IS 9873 safety requirements, covering mechanical hazards, small parts, flammability and heavy-metal migration. Certificate and test documentation for a specific product is available on request — contact us with the product name before ordering.

What wood and paint are used?

We use solid neem and beech wood with water-based, child-safe colours and food-grade oils or beeswax on unfinished pieces. We avoid MDF, lead paint, BPA, PVC and phthalates, and sand every edge until it is smooth.

Which toys are safe for babies who mouth everything?

For babies 0–12 months choose large wooden rattles, teethers and grasping toys with no small detachable beads, no glued-on parts and a food-grade finish. Always check the age badge and inspect for cracks or loose parts before each use.

How should I inspect and clean wooden toys?

Wipe daily with a barely damp cloth and air-dry fully. For deeper cleaning, use equal parts white vinegar and water, wipe immediately and never soak or dishwash wooden toys. Retire any toy with splinters, cracks, loose joints or chipped paint.
